How the Challenge Works

The Shape Up Challenge is a physical activity competition between area businesses and organizations. The competition lasts four weeks. Each week, the business that accumulates the most minutes of exercise wins!

Organizations

You can sign up your organization after Monday, March 24th and before Friday, April 25th.
  • Sign up your organization here.
  • Designate a Team Coordinator for your team(s) and tell them the username and password for their team.
  • Pay the Entry Fee to the YMCA.
  • Encourage competition between departments. Offer a prize to the winning department.

Team Coordinators

  • With the username and password for your team, given to you by the person that signed up your organization, register your Team Members in the Team Coordinator Corner.
  • Order T-Shirts
  • Pick up materials/information at the Mankato Family YMCA, Lifecenter desk.
  • Display wallchart for team members to log minutes for you or ask them to email you.
  • Promote the Shape Up Challenge at your worksite(s)
  • Announce Shape Up Challenge Events. Direct team members to the Shape Up Events Calendar.
  • Enter weekly team minutes for each team member in the Team Coordinator Corner.
  • Print and post weekly results for your team or direct them to see them online.

Participants

  • Exercise and Record your minutes of aerobic exercise each day. Turn in your minutes once a week during the challenge to your Team Coordinator.
  • Exercise defined for the purpose of the Shape Up Challenge is defined as: "Ongoing physical activity that reaches moderate intensity is rhythmic, continuous and uses large muscle groups".
    Examples of exercise that counts: Racquetball, Tennis, Swimming, Weight Training, Rowing, Volleyball, Golf* without a cart, Jump-roping, Ice Skating, Softball*, Mowing with a push mower, Raking, Walking, Biking, Aerobics, Running, Inline Skating and any Cardio Machines.
    Examples of exercise that doesn't count: Cleaning, Shopping, Painting, Golf* with cart, Riding lawnmower, Horseback Riding, and any activity done on the job.

    *Golf without a cart = 120 minutes max for 9 holes; 240 minutes max for 18 holes
    *Softball = 60 minutes max per game
  • Earn BONUS minutes when you participate in YMCA Challenge Events. These events are open to members and non-members of the YMCA. See events on the Events Calendar
  • Only personal exercise outside of work hours may be recorded.
  • Schedule exercise into your day. Try to complete a minimum of 30 minutes of continuous exercise each day or break it up into three 10 minute sessions.
  • Make exercise fun by getting co-workers involved. Create a "buddy system" to keep each other motivated.
  • Try to attend all YMCA events offered to Shape Up Challenge participants. Events are open to members and non-members.
Bonus minutes are awarded for participation in special YMCA Shape Up Challenge events (see Shape Up Calendar). Sixty Bonus minutes are awarded for attending these events!

Bonus Event = 60 minutes + 60 Bonus minutes for a total of 120 minutes!!!

Prizes


Weekly Prizes:
One team in each division with the highest average minutes will receive a prize each week.

Grand Prizes:
“Best Team Name” overall
“Highest Team Minutes” in each division
“Best Team Participant Average” overall
“Highest Individual Minutes” overall

Also, many competing organizations have set up their own internal prize/reward system to encourage participation by their employees - parties, prizes, fun "awards"!
